ROPES Smile Visit
ROPES Smile Visit

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40 - NIV

One of our core programs for our students at the Mawewa School is our Rights of Passage Program (ROPES). Through a series of interactive lessons and practical experiences, our ROPES program, which focuses on Christ-centered character development, prepares our learners for the pressures of high school and beyond. At the end of October, our Grade 8 students raised money from staff, family and friends to buy provisions to bless the orphaned or abandoned children of the Smile Community Centre Children's Home in Kayole, which is near Mathare North where Mawewa School is located.

The students' community service visit involved showing love and care for the orphaned children through various activities such as fetching water, cooking, washing and cleaning both their laundry and living areas.

A highlight of our students' visit was the making of chapati (Kenyan flatbread) which involves a labor intensive process of rolling out individual mounds of dough into perfect thin circles which are then pan fried into a delicious side. Some of our students also took the time to help feed some of the youngest residents at the children's home with the meal they had prepared.

Following their visit, our students talked about their new experiences serving others and shared that they never want to take for granted all that they have, especially the gift of having parents. Even though our students live in poverty themselves, through our ROPES program, they learned the lesson of gratitude as they helped other children who were in even more difficult circumstances. Our students also grew in the gift of generosity as they learned to fundraise, gave of their resources, their time and talents to serve others. Through your generosity, not only do our students receive nourishment, education and unique experiences, they are learning the gift of generosity. Would you consider making a gift today to invest in programs like ROPES that bring transformation to our students, and change their outlook on life. Thank you for making such meaningful, life giving investments in our students!
