Skill Training

eduKenya operates a skill training program to teach sewing and cosmetology skills to parents of students at the Kwa Watoto School and other community members. While open to both men and women, the majority of program trainees are women working to support the education of their children and raise their overall level of living. The majority of trainees have not completed education beyond the primary level.

Graduates of the program often utilize their new skills in running “Jua Kali” microenterprises, which are small businesses in the large informal sector that operate in open-air kiosks. The outcome of the program is empowerment and increased earning potential, which improves self-esteem, confidence and a sense of control over their lives. Having mastered new income generating skills, trainees are better able to meet the needs of their families, leading to better education, healthcare and overall development outcomes for their children.
