Food insecurity and micronutrient deficiencies are stark realities for most children in the Mathare slum, who are often uncertain about where their next meal will come from. eduKenya’s Kwa Watoto School serves as a feeding center, providing two nutritious meals for students each school day. For many children, the food they receive through the school’s feeding program is all they eat for the day.

Poor educational and health outcomes are linked with food insecurity and malnutrition, as children have diminished capacity to concentrate, impaired cognitive functioning and physical ailments that make learning difficult. Malnutrition additionally impairs the body’s ability to resist infection, leading to increased absenteeism from school.

The nutritious meals we serve enable our students to concentrate on learning and reach their educational potential. The stunning reality is that it costs less than $8 to feed one child for a month in our feeding program.
